Contract Awarded to McLean by Kinder Morgan Operating L.P.
McLean Contracting Company has recently been awarded the Marine Contract portion of the Pier IX Coal Import Project for Kinder Morgan Operating L.P. “C”. The project is located at Kinder Morgan’s Pier IX Terminal in Newport News, VA.
The Coal Import Project is intended to expand the existing Terminal’s capacities to include receiving imported coal delivered in Panamax ships and to ship coal out in unit trains. It will include extending existing Pier IX and construction of new Pier X with related facilities.
The new Pier X dock for unloading coal is designed with a continuous pile supported concrete deck measuring approximately 600 ft. by 58 ft. The dock includes crane rails for two ship unloading cranes, hoppers and conveyors to transfer the material into an existing storage yard.
The existing Pier IX is used as a platform to load coal for outbound shipment and to unload cement inbound. The existing pier will be extended 280 ft., the existing crane rails will be extended, the existing cement unloader will be relocated to the offshore end of the pier and the cement conveyor will be extended.
The Marine Contract awarded to McLean includes extending Pier IX and construction of new Pier X. This contract includes all the marine facilities anchor bolts down and excludes the supply of piling materials.
Pier IX is supported by a combination of 36” diameter concrete cylinder piles up to 180 ft. long and 36” diameter steel pipe piles up to 190 ft. long. The pier caps are cast in place concrete and the deck is composed of precast concrete planks with a cast in place topping slab. The work includes extending the existing crane rail, supply and installation of all stairs, ladders, fenders and mooring bollards.
Pier X is supported by a combination of 36” diameter concrete cylinder piles up to 185 ft. long and 36” diameter steel pipe piles up to 200 ft. long. The pier caps are a combination of cast in place concrete and precast units. The deck is composed of precast concrete planks with a cast in place topping slab. The work includes supply and installation of new crane rail, all stairs, ladders, fenders and mooring bollards.
Pier X work also includes construction of three (3) mooring dolphins, one (1) turning dolphin and an access trestle roadway to the new pier.
Work on this project will continue through the summer of 2007.
